This is a small bat house I designed and built to fit over the
end of this riverbirch pole. The scaly bark of the pole creates
an excellent landing surface for any bat that wants to camp out
in this house set about eight feet off the ground. It is stained
green to mimic the color of the background trees and stained dark
to absorb sunlight and keep any resident bats nice and toasty -
their body temperature is well over 100 degrees and they like to
hang out in hot places. Although I could not actually see bats up
inside the house during the day, I could hear them chirping away
- about what, nobody knows.
The Kettler Design Studio designs bat houses ranging from simple
boxes like this to larger units that will house dozens of bats,
to structures mimicking the shape and size of a small building.
We can also design more elaborate summer bat dwellings and would
like to have the opportunity to build some of the bat hibernacula
we have designed after years of research and development.
