Like many of my favorite plants, pokeweed, another native plant, is despised by gardeners and plant suppliers. It grows to be so big and the plant is so prolific, it exudes exuberance and vitality. And it has so many fine ornamental qualities, like big green leaves, deep pink stems, and rich purple berries that look like clusters of grapes.

At six to eight feet tall, this great plant is also a favorite food for some birds, including mockingbirds and cardinals. By January, when the last of the berries have shrivelled into raisin-like fruits, the plants will have been picked clean by hungry birds.

Every yard and garden should have at least one pokeweed plant. It will make many birds happy!
