Designed and published in 1984, these classic posters were created
as a project of Kettler Ecological Design to promote and popularize
renewable energy. These natural energy sources have gone largely
untapped over this time span. However, suddenly, 30 years later,
there is fresh and renewed interest in renewable energy, especially
windpower and solar energy, and highly efficient geothermal heat
pumps that can be used at the residential scale. Increasing populations
and rising standards of living are creating huge demands for energy,
fuels, and electricity, while the public and policy-makers squabble
about oil spills, dirty coal, tar sands pipelines, fracking for
natural gas, and the potential hazards of nuclear power and its
radioactive wastes. Political instability threatens a reliable supply
of petroleum to an oil-thirsty world. People and policy-makers are
finally seeing that regardless of the role of fossil and nuclear
fuels in the future, renewable energies will and must be utilized
on a much greater scale across the globe.
The poster images are 20 x 30 inches on 24 x 36 inch high quality
paper, giving the images a 2 inch white border. Each poster has
small text at the bottom describing the past, present, and future
of each energy type. Printed in bright, bold colors, they make a
dramatic statement about the power generated daily by the earth
and sun. Attractive, decorative, and educational for homes, offices,
or schools. The images are also available as notecards with envelopes,
and as postcards.
A company in Syracuse New York called Syracuse Cultural Workers
published a second edition of the 4 images in 2010, which they call
The Renewable Energy Collection. All the products are printed by
union labor in the United States on 100% postconsumer waste recycled
papers, processed chlorine free with no dioxin. They have an entire
catalog of socially progressive products and pubications.
The price of a single poster is $20, and a set of all four is $72.
